PHEV Performance

In other markets, both front and rear electric motors have been increased. The rear axles provide robust power from 30kW to 100kW while the maximum torque remains unchanged. The front axle torque was substantially increased from 37Nm to 255Nm. The battery has been improved to have a greater capacity, increasing from 13.8 to 20 kWh and the range of the charge has been improved. The EPA cycle on the old PHEV was 24 miles, but the 2023 PHEV should be able to get an improved EV-only range..

While Mitsubishi has also expanded the 2023 Outlander PHEV's gas tank capacity to increase the total range, no figures have been provided at this time. In other markets - the all new Outlander PHEV has been launched with a fuel efficient 2.4 liter engine. We are awaiting the exact specifics on this engine after Mitsubishi Motors confirms US production. The 2023 model provides a new pedal mode, so that driving with one pedal is possible, meaning the 2023 model has seven drive modes available. Among these are the slippery condition mode, a Power mode, and an Eco mode.

Prior Changes that Helped Refresh the 2023 Outlander PHEV

So as exciting as the new specs for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are, the true refresh began with the 2022 model.  The Outlander, both hybrid and standard, was a bit outdated in its features, but with new 2022 designs came some fixes to the older Outlanders. The first change is that the Outlander was moved to a Rogue platform for smooth handling. Then, Mitsubishi adopted a more modern interior and exterior styling to include a third row of seating, making it more of a family vehicle.

With new styling and interior comfort as well as a third row, the 2023 PHEV has more to offer in a compact SUV, but the basic design is still the same. Although some information is known about the 2023 model, much is not known yet as followers wait for more hints from Mitsubishi. It is likely to be built on the 2022 model's drive train with some improvements in the redesign. Be looking for the new model to make it to the U.S. around mid-2022, so check with your White Bear Mitsubishi dealer sometime during the summer of 2022. Until then, stop in and see the current models to find a vehicle that fits your needs.

The Mitsubishi Outlander arrived as a fully redesigned model for 2022. The Outlander plug-in hybrid will be redesigned to match the gas-only version in the second half of 2022. Both vehicles are expected to be refreshed in 2024. For the 2023 model year, the gas Outlander is likely to be a carryover model, while it’s likely that the Outlander PHEV will arrive as a fully redesigned model for 2023.

The 2023 Outlander should retain the same overall design as the model that’s currently on sale. The fully redesigned Outlander PHEV will arrive with a design that matches the gas model. The current Outlander features a bold, futuristic design with razor-thin daytime running lights, large headlights that are positioned in the middle of the front fascia, and a trim piece that follows the curvature of the grill and connects the front lights. The rear end of the Outlander is far more subdued with pointy taillights and dual exhaust cutouts on the rear bumpers.

The interior of the current Outlander is far more upscale than anything we’ve seen from the brand. The cabin has a straightforward dashboard, a simple center console layout, a chunky gear selector, and a round drive mode selector positioned close to the center console. The SUV also comes with a large amount of soft-touch materials to back its premium look. In the compact class, the Outlander is one of the few options to come with seating for up to seven. The 2023 Outlander and Outlander PHEV should have the same interior design as the current SUV on sale.

On the tech front, the upcoming Outlander and Outlander PHEV will have the same features as the 2022 model. We expect an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, six audio speakers, two USB ports, and Bluetooth to be standard. Available features should include a nine-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, an HD Radio, 10 audio speakers, a wireless charging pad, two extra USB ports, and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

Mitsubishi offers the regular Outlander with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission [CVT]. This engine should remain the same for 2023. Mitsubishi hasn’t confirmed what kind of powertrain the Outlander PHEV will come with, but we expect to see an updated version of the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and two-electric motor powertrain that’s in the current model. While the current PHEV makes 221 hp, we expect the upcoming model to be more powerful.

The 2023 Outlander should arrive with the same safety features as the current SUV that’s on sale. Standard features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, a driver drowsiness monitor, automatic high-beam assist, and rear-seat alert. Available safety features include traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view parking camera.
