  • Hi All,

We currently have 4 DC running server 2008 R2 which we are looking to upgrade next year to server 2016. Group Policy is used to control 1200 windows 7 clients.

We recently got some new machines with windows 10 and we would like to update the central store [ PolicyDefinition] folder on DC to the latest windows 10 version so we could also lock down the windows 10 machine.

most of the GPO's that was configured for the windows 7 computers are working on the windows 10 machine.

could you please confirm if it is ok to just copy the new windows 10 admx template to the central store and over write the existing ones?

Would if affect the over policy that is currently in place for the windows 7 machine?

would it cause any other problems?

  • Hi,
Group policy template file is only used to display group policy settings in the GPMC or gpeditor, upgrading adms files would not affect existing GPO settings which are applied to clients.
However, in some situations, an operating system or service pack release may include a subset of the ADM files that was provided with earlier releases. This has the potential to present an earlier subset of the ADM files, resulting in policy settings no longer being visible to administrators when they use Group Policy Object Editor. However, the policy settings will remain active in the GPO. Only the visibility of the policy settings in Group Policy Object Editor is affected.
    Please see details from:
Recommendations for managing Group Policy administrative template [.adm] files

    Best regards,
    Wendy
