Your MacBook can pick up dirt and oil from your hands, food and other sources of debris in your world. When doing presentations using your computer, you want attention to focus on your message, not on the smudges on your laptop. Cleaning your MacBook regularly can help keep it looking sharp, and can also prevent your keyboard, trackpad or ports from malfunctioning.

1

Power off your MacBook by selecting the "Shut Down..." option from the Apple menu.

2

Disconnect the power adapter from your laptop. Disconnecting your MacBook from a power source minimizes the chance of damage to sensitive electrical components during cleaning.

3

Moisten a microfiber cloth with water and wipe the surface of your MacBook. Do not moisten the cloth to the extent that it leaves residual water on your laptop, as this may damage electrical components. Wipe to remove any dust, debris and minor stains.

4

Moisten a cotton ball or wipe with isopropyl, or rubbing, alcohol, and then use short, vigorous scrubbing motions to loosen and remove oil from your laptop's surfaces. Isopropyl alcohol is commonly available in either 70 or 91 percent concentrations; the higher percentage is better as it evaporates more readily and leaves behind less moisture. Isopropyl alcohol dissolves and removes oil much more readily than water.

5

Apply a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol to crevices and between the keys on your keyboard. The cotton swab may also help you apply a greater force when scrubbing stubborn oil spots.

6

Dry the surfaces of your MacBook with a dry cotton wipe to remove any excess isopropyl alcohol.

7

Allow your MacBook 15 to 20 minutes to dry completely before reconnecting it to a power source.
