Why do gaming laptops get worse?

Previous Next Sort by votes

Hi , i am having the following problem with my laptop for the last few months. Laptop is a LENOVO Y50-70. Whenever i start playing games like league of legends or cs:go, the performance allways start to degrade. I start league of legends with average 1200-200 fps . After a short duration of time the performance goes down to an average of 70-90 and a while later goes down to 25-40 which is unplayable. In order for this to happen it needs about 1 hour of gaming. After i restart the pc it goes back to normal , and starts to degrade again over time . The OS is windows 8.1. Please help

[ Yes i have made sure its not on a power economy mode etc etc, the heat levels seem regular etc etc etc]

I had to RMA a laptop with almost identical symptoms. The Nvidia GPU would start off working normally, but it would quickly [after 2 to 60 seconds] get stuck at its lowest possible clock speed - basically the same framerate as integrated graphics. Try using GPU monitoring tools that display GPU clock speed to see if you're suffering a similar problem. Resetting the GPU [quitting the game and restarting it] would clear up the problem, until it happened again. Have you tried playing the game on battery? On my laptop, the GPU would run fine on battery, and if the battery was being charged [although at a slower than max speed since the battery couldn't provide enough power to run the GPU + CPU at max]. But the moment the battery finished charging and the GPU tried to ramp up to full speed, it would enter this faulty state again and framerate would plummet.

I RMA'd the laptop, the manufacturer ran some tests on it, and concluded it was a defective GPU.

its a laptop so most likely the problem is the CPU is throttling because the laptop starts to overheat. especially when you're running a game constantly for more than an hour

I am not sure if that's the case, a couple of months earlier i was able to play non stop for 8 hours The Witcher 3 without a single fps drop over time. Right now the laptop started doing even more crazy things. First of all it started to not recognize the pgu out of nowhere. Then it boots, stays open for about 15 seconds and the freezes and needs hard reset.

if that's the case there may be dust getting in the laptop that is preventing proper cooling.
