Will there be season 3 of The Son?

‘The Son’ is an American western drama television series that airs on AMC. It first premiered on April 8, 2017, and the show is based on the acclaimed 2013 book of the same name, written by Philipp Meyer. Meyer has also helped to develop the series for television along with Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. Sonar Entertainment, El Jefe, and Five & Dime Productions are the companies backing the project, while Michael Connolly, Tom Lesinski, Jenna Santoianni, Tom Harper, Kevin Murphy, Philipp Meyer, Brian McGreevy, and Lee Shipman are on board as the executive producers of the show.

The show is basically a recounting of America as a superpower, and it is told as an epic tale spanning across generations and centered on the rise and fall of one oil empire in Texas. Pierce Brosnan makes a resounding return to the glitz and glamour of television shows with this intense western. A blitzing start to the story sees Brosnan take charge and deliver a memorable performance that will bring him back among the esteemed personnel of Hollywood.

Although the series attracted quite a strong fan base, since the genre is interesting, and Brosnan’s star power is enough to draw crowds, the critical consensus of the show has only been lukewarm, stating that narrative is epic, but the series struggles due to poor pacing, superficial execution, and hasty decisions in direction.

The Son Cast: Who is in it?

The main cast of ‘The Son’ includes Pierce Brosnan who is the protagonist, playing the role of Eli. Boasting the same name as Paul Thomas Anderson’s self-serving character from his magnum opus ‘There Will Be Blood‘, Brosnan’s character has a contrasting personality to his namesake. His interests are actually more akin to that of Eli Sunday’s nemesis, Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, with an avid involvement in the oil industry.

Henry Garrett plays the role of Pete McCullough, Eli’s youngest son. Zahn McClarnon appears in the role of Toshaway, the Comanche tribal chief, who captures Eli but begins to think of him as a son. Paola Nunez plays the role of María García, Pete’s childhood friend, who gets mixed up in the violence that keeps escalating in South Texas. Sydney Lucas plays Jeannie McCullough, Pete’s daughter and Eli’s granddaughter, who eventually holds a key spot in the family business.

Lois Smith (‘Lady Bird’) plays Jeanne Anne McCullough at 85 years old in 1988. One of the last survivors of the McCullough clan, she’s aged into a suspicious and guarded cynic who lives alone on the family ranch while still presiding over a large, multinational oil concern.

Jeremy Bobb plays Buddy Monahan, an affable and gregarious former wildcatter who now works as a fixer for Standard Oil of Pennsylvania. He’s a striver and a corporate climber, circa 1916, keen to prove his worth to his backers up north by cajoling ranchers into selling away their mineral rights.

Duke Davis Roberts plays Nocona, Young Eli’s friend and supporter within the Comanche world. Nocona is physically imposing, but also good-natured and jocular.

Glenn Stanton plays Fat Wolf, Toshaway’s estranged biological son who is now chief of another band of Comanches known as the Yap-Eaters. The two Chiefs will be forced to confront a deep and lingering animosity. David Sullivan plays Matthew Wentworth, a self-assured captain in the Texas National Guard who maintains a close relationship with Phineas McCullough, and acts as his confidante and booster.

Alex Hernandez plays Ulises Gonzales, an intelligent and ambitious Mexican immigrant working illegally for Jeanne Anne in 1988. His prowess working with horses provides him with the chance to spend more time with Jeanne Anne and to learn more about the storied McCullough family’s history.

It might interest fans to know that Sam Neill, who has appeared in numerous films and shows like ‘Jurassic Park‘, ‘The Tudors’, and ‘Peaky Blinders‘, was initially supposed to play the role of Eli, but left due to personal reasons. Brosnan was cast instead, and there has been no looking back ever since.

The Son Plot: What is it about?

The main plot of ‘The Son’ is centered around Eli and his family, as they struggle to keep a hold of their land. It follows the family business and juxtaposes it to America’s rise to a superpower. As the story progresses, we see that there are some generic tropes like the fact that the white man may be the real savage or the fact that violence begets violence down in Texas. However, Pete and Eli’s relationship is the saving grace, and we see how sons try to escape the legacies and shadows of their fathers and families, to often return to the same spot and repeat the same mistakes that were made in history.

Brosnan’s performance is perfectly delivered, but the overall execution of the show could be much better instead of being rather forgettable, considering the source material’s richness that was made available. In all likelihood, there will not be an upcoming season, but if there was one, we would like to see more of how the family tries to hold on to their business interests and salvage their relationships with each other.

The Son Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘The Son’ Season 2 premiered on April 27, 2019. AMC has already announced that this is the last season of the show, so there is not going to be another season. However, we never say never, and it is always possible for another network to pick up the show, considering Brosnan still has a pretty huge fan following. However, even if the show lives on, it will be a good couple of years before we see it on television. As soon as we come to know about any news around ‘The Son’ Season 3, we will update this section.
