You can access Azure Virtual Desktop resources on devices with Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, and Windows 7 using the Windows Desktop client.
Important
This method doesn't support Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
This method only supports Azure Resource Manager objects. To support objects without Azure Resource Manager, see Connect with Windows Desktop [classic] client.
This method also doesn't support the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections [RADC] client or the Remote Desktop Connection [MSTSC] client.

Have you ever had trouble getting your end users connected to their published RDS feed, either because of a single missing character in the feed URL or because they lost the email with the URL? Nearly all Remote Desktop client applications support finding your subscription by entering your email address, making it easier than ever to get your users connected to their RemoteApps and desktops.
Before you set up email discovery, do the following:
- Make sure you have permission to add a TXT record to the domain associated with your email [for example, if your users have @contoso.com email addresses, you would need permissions for the contoso.com domain]
- Create an RD Web feed URL [//.domain/RDWeb/Feed/webfeed.aspx, such as //rdweb.contoso.com/RDWeb/Feed/webfeed.aspx]
Note
If you're using Azure Virtual Desktop instead of Remote Desktop, you'll want to use these URLs instead:
- If you're using Azure Virtual Desktop [classic]: //rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/api/feeddiscovery/webfeeddiscovery.aspx
- If you're using Azure Virtual Desktop: //rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/api/arm/feeddiscovery
Now, follow these steps to set up email discovery:
In your browser, connect to the website of the domain name registrar where your domain is registered.
Navigate to the appropriate page for your registered domain where you can view, add, and edit DNS records.
Enter a new DNS record with the following properties:
- Host: _msradc
- Text:
- TTL: 300 seconds
The names of the DNS records fields vary by domain name registrar, but this process will result in a TXT record named _msradc. [such as _msradc.contoso.com] that has a value of the full RD Web feed.
That's it! Now, launch the Remote Desktop application on your device and subscribe yourself!

Download RD Client for AVD
- Download the RD Client for AVD from the following links:
- Windows 64-bit
- Windows 32-bit
- Windows ARM64
Install
- Install the MSI Remote Desktop_***.msi [Admin access is required if you are installing it manually]
NOTE! – I will cover Intune/SCCM installation options of RD client for AVD in the future posts.
- Click Next
- Click on Accept and Next
- Select Install Just for you and click Next
- Click on Finish and Launch
RD Client Subscription Options for AVD
I have a post about Install & Subscribe Windows RD Client for AVD End User Step by Step Guide. However, the end-user experience got changed with the release of new AVD experience [a.k.a AVD v2 spring 2020 release].
NOTE! – There are two ways you can subscribe to a Workspace. The RD client can try to discover the resources available to you from your work or school account. The other option is that you can directly specify the URL where your resources are for cases where the client is unable to find them.
- Once the RD client is installed, the users shall get two options
- Subscribe
- Subscribe with URL
- For the Non ARM version of AVD, the user needs to click on Subscribe with URL.
- Copy the Workspace URL for AVD v1 [Windows Virtual Desktop Fall 2019].
- //rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/api/feeddiscovery/webfeeddiscovery.aspx
- Paste the above URL to the Email or Workspace URL box.
NOTE! – User the following URL for AVD Azure Virtual Desktop Spring 2020://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/api/arm/feeddiscovery. This is required in a particular scenario where your subscribe option is working.
Click on the Next button. Wait until you get a message
We found workspaces at the following URLs.
Enter the Azure AD User Name and Password.
