This article was updated on 8/3/2022 with the latest 2023 Mazda CX-90 information. Mazda plans to expand its crossover SUV lineup with the range-topping 2023 Mazda CX-90 three-row seven-seater SUV. The
CX-90 is expected to be larger and more luxurious than anything that Mazda currently offers, including the CX-9. It’s slated to join a list of new Mazda SUVs announced for 2023 including the all-new CX-70. Find out what we know so far about the expected hybrid engine options, features, and design of the 2023 Mazda CX-90. The release date of the 2023 Mazda CX-90 will likely be in early 2023. Production of the 2023 CX-90 is expected to start in late 2022. The CX-90 will be available to buy at Mazda dealerships throughout the United States, as well as in select international markets. For the pre-order/reservation
information of the Mazda CX-90, stay tuned. Mazda didn’t yet release the price or trims information for the 2023 CX-90. However, Car and Driver estimates that the 2023 CX-90 will have a starting cost of around $40,000. The automotive site also gives an estimated price breakdown of the Mazda CX-90, following the traditional trim lineup of
Mazda’s other models: The 2023 CX-90 will be the first Mazda model to use the automaker’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The new turbo engine is expected to be “augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system.” With the hybrid system, Mazda appears to be following the playbook of luxury
SUVs such as the Land Rover Range Rover Sport and the BMW X5, which have similar systems. This demonstrates a move toward the luxury SUV segment with the CX-90. When will the
2023 Mazda CX-90 be available?
How much do we expect the 2023 Mazda CX-90 cost?
Horsepower and torque specs are not yet available for the turbo 3.0L engine in CX-90. However, these figures will undoubtedly surpass the 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque for the 2.5-liter turbo-four engine in the CX-9.
Another likely possibility for the CX-90 is a plug-in hybrid [PHEV] model, which might use the same system as the European-market CX-60 crossover SUV. It features an “inline four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery pack,” which generates a total system output of 323 horsepower. Also, like the rest of the Mazda SUV lineup, the CX-90 will probably have standard all-wheel drive.
Will the Mazda CX-90 replace the CX-9?
It’s unknown if the Mazda CX-90 will replace the CX-9 or be sold alongside it. Mazda faces the same question with the CX-50 and CX-5 compact crossover SUVs. Previously, Mazda replaced the CX-3 with the CX-30 subcompact crossover SUV. If we had to place a bet, we’d wager that Mazda will sell both the CX-90 and CX-9 for a few years before the CX-90 eventually replaces the CX-9.

Mazda is about to take its luxury aspirations to the next level, introducing three new SUVs by 2023. Two of these new vehicles will use its long-awaited new longitudinal architecture with inline-six-cylinder engines and plug-in-hybrid options.

Andi Hedrick|Car and DriverThe CX-50 will be the first to arrive, debuting in November, and it will be a mid-size crossover, like the CX-5 [pictured], that will share a platform with the CX-30, so expect some black body cladding. It will enter production at Mazda's factory in Huntsville, Alabama in January. Mazda will sell the CX-50 alongside the CX-5, and we think it will likely start a few thousand dollars higher the current CX-5's $26,545 starting price.
Mazda's new longitudinal platform will debut two new models: the CX-70 and CX-90, both of which Mazda says will have widebody designs. The former is a two-row SUV and the latter a three row. They'll have the choice of either a turbocharged inline-six engine or a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that uses an inline-four gasoline engine. As with all of Mazda's CX models, all-wheel drive will be standard.
The CX-70 will be introduced as a new model like the CX-50, but Mazda says the CX-90 will replace the CX-9 in its lineup.
