Set up your home Mac (first time only)1. On your home Mac, download the free Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the Mac App Store
2. Click the Microsoft Remote Desktop Menu (top left of your screen) and then select Preferences

Mac OS X Remote Desktop Connection Instructions
If you have not recently connected to this computer there will be a delay as your profile is created. This is normal.
- Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop application
- Click the "+" icon
- Select PC
- For PC Name, enter the name of the remote computer to connect to. Or check How to find my computer name
- For User Account, click the dropdown to change the setting
- Click Add User Account
- For User Name, type in Domain\Username
- For Password, type your UMKC Username Password. Note: you will need to update your Remote Desktop settings every time you change your UMKC Username password.
- Click Save
- For Friendly Name, enter the PC name
- Click on no gateway to change the setting
- Select Add Gateway from the dropdown
- For Server Name, enter tsg.umkc.edu
- For User Account, click Use PC User account
- Select your UMKC username from the list
- Click Add
- Click Add again
- To initiate the connection, double click on your PC Name tile
- Click Show Certificate
- Click Always Trust to prevent seeing this warning again for the PC specified
- Click Continue
You are now connected!
For the most part the latest Remote Desktop 10 app is the best option if you need to RDP on your Mac. However Remote Desktop 10 requires macOS Sierra 10.12 or later, so there’s several reasons why it might not be possible or convenient to install it:
- Your Mac is too old to run macOS Sierra
- Updating macOS may break other legacy applications on your Mac
- You don’t have an Apple ID available to use to upgrade macOS via the App Store
- You don’t have time to upgrade macOS
Installing Remote Desktop 8 is a good workaround, as it can run on older versions of macOS. However unfortunately it is no longer available on the Mac App Store or from Microsoft. There are some software download sites that offer Remote Desktop 8, however they are likely to contain malware.
