Network Topology is a network of computers that are connected and arrange in a specific manner. In Networks, computers are connected with other computers this structure and design are called topologies.

  • They use LAN connections for high speed up to 100MBPS.
  • Star Topology is used in small institutes.
  • All the devices are connected to each other via HUB or SWITCH
  • All the nodes are connected to the central HUB and if any node is failed doesn’t harm or damage the entire network.
  • These star networks are quiet cheaper compares to other network topologies.
  • They are very easy in maintenance and up gradation.

What is Star Topology?

In Star topology computers, laptops, printers, and scanners are connected with a networking device known as HUB.

The HUB acts as the communicating device which receives and transfers information and data between computers and laptops through them [HUB].

Whenever the computers and laptops in the computer network need to communicate with each other i.e. receive or transfer data and information they need to interact with the HUB.

Applications of Star Topology

And hence HUB acts as the intermediate device which helps in communicating with other devices in the network.

HUB is centered in the structure or the design of the star topology where all the devices like laptops, computers, and printers are connected to each other.

The design and structure form a figure like a star, therefore, this type of topology is called as Star Topology.

Advantages of Star Topology

  • They can be easily updated and up-graded new nodes can be easily added anytime users demands.
  • They are cheap.
  • They are easy to troubleshoot
  • They are fast networks.

Disadvantages of Star Topology

  • The star topology is heavily dependent on centralized HUB or SWITCH.
  • The number of devices connected to the star network depends on the switch or HUB.
  • If majority of the nodes are operating at the same time put loads on the network and hence the speed is decreased considerably.
  • To manage and maintained can be costly sometimes depending upon some conditions.
  • They are dependent on electric supply.

Star topology is a network topology in which each network component is physically connected to a central node such as a router, hub or switch.

In a star topology, the central hub acts like a server and the connecting nodes act like clients. When the central node receives a packet from a connecting node, it can pass the packet on to other nodes in the network. A star topology is also known as a star network.

Star networks require a point-to-point connection between the central node and connecting devices. To improve communication between the devices on the network, the central node can provide signal reconditioning and amplification services.

Star topologies are often used in home networks. The benefits of a star network topology include the following:

  • Limits the impact of a single point of failure. In star networks, each connecting node is isolated from other connecting nodes. If one connecting node goes down, it will not impact the performance of other connecting nodes in the network.
  • Facilitates adding or removing individual components to and from a network. Star networks are usually kept small because network performance can suffer when too many devices compete for access to the central node.
