Can I still order a 2023 Maverick?

If you want a Ford Maverick and haven’t already placed your order, you may have missed your window. Again. According to a letter sent to dealers and posted to the Maverick Truck Club forum, retail orders for the 2023 Maverick will close either today or tomorrow depending on whether you want the hybrid or gas model.

This means the order books are closing just five days after they re-opened to the public.

When orders close exactly

If you would like to place a specific order for a 2023 Maverick – you know where you choose the options and paint color yourself – the clock is ticking. The memo states the following key days:

  • September 20, 2022: Dealers have until 10 p.m. EST to submit new 2023 2.5-liter hybrid retail orders.
  • September 21, 2022: Dealers Dealers have until 10 p.m. EST to submit new 2023 2.0-liter EcoBoost gas retail orders.
  • October 5, 2022: Dealers must complete the Retail Order Verification Process by 10 p.m. EST.

This doesn’t mean you’re completely SOL if you want a 2023 Maverick, it just means you might not get the exact truck you want. Dealers can continue to submit orders for dealer stock inventory, and customers can purchase those trucks when they get to the dealer.

But there’s no guarantee in any of that.

What’s new for 2023?

Because this was an all-new truck for the 2022 model year, there aren’t huge sweeping changes. But biggie for 2023 is the addition of the Tremor package. It’ll be built off the FX4 Off-Road package and gets a 1-inch lift, Trail Control, cool Tremor badging and advanced all-wheel drive – among other things.

Ford hasn’t officially announced pricing for the 2023 model – nor is it available on the consumer configurator – but Ford Authority reports the base price increases by $1,200, and the new starting price of the 2023 Maverick XL is $22,195. The Lariat tops out at $27,955, which is a $1,095 increase.

The bottom line on the 2023 Maverick

If you want the 2023 Ford Maverick, speak now or forever hold your peace. We’ve reached out to Ford Motor Co. to verify this dealer memo is correct and to see when the order books might re-open, but we haven’t heard back at the time of posting this article. So, assume you’re now looking at the 2024 model year, and you likely won’t be able to order it until this time next year.

And, um, maybe mark your calendar for the beginning of September to be on Maverick watch.

The Ford Maverick is a bigger hit than most people imagined, and Ford seems to be included in that group. Since its release, the compact pickup has been met with sky high demand, making it exceptionally difficult to get your hands on one. In fact, demand is so high that Ford is closing its order banks for the 2023 model year just a few days after finally re-opening them last week.

According to Maverick Truck Club, Ford issued a statement to dealers explaining the early order bank closing: "The customer demand for Maverick has continued to be incredibly strong. Coupled with ongoing supply chain challenges and the importance of focusing on existing orders, we are making the decision to turn off the ability to submit new 2023 Model Year Maverick retail orders per the dates shown below."

Orders finally re-opened on Sept. 15 after Ford closed them back in January—they just didn't last long. Tuesday, September 20 will be the last day to custom spec your own Maverick hybrid, and if you want a 2.0-liter EcoBoost, you've got until Wednesday, Sept. 21. Dealers will have until 10 p.m. on both days to close the order books for each model, which means that any customer that doesn't get an order may be left waiting until the 2024 model year Maverick pops up.

Unfortunately for any customers whose 2023 Maverick orders don't get built, Ford isn't offering a 2023-2024 model year transition like it did for 2022 model year buyers. That means you'll have to go through the process all over again the next year, seemingly with no special privilege to leapfrog the line.

Dealerships will be limited to how many 2023 model year retail orders they can take based on allocation and parts availability. So if you still want to spec your own 2023 Ford Maverick, you'd better call your local Ford store as soon as absolutely possible and hope that one of them still has a slot available.

If there aren't any slots left, customers might still be able to get their hands on a 2023 Maverick, but it may not be the one they wanted. Dealers will still be able to order 2023 Mavericks for their own inventory, and those that get delivered can be bought off the lot. You'll be at their mercy when it comes to options and pricing, of course.
