The higher trim configurations come with full black Caturra Brown Nappa leather as standard. However, there are six different color and upholstery options, some of which are not offered for the lower trims. The silver and chrome accents, chunky leather-wrapped steering wheel, and well-integrated infotainment screen add to the luxury feel too. 8/10 Towing Capacity Could Have Been Better
If you intend to tow with your compact crossover SUV, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 will disappoint you very much. The naturally aspirated inline-4 and the turbocharged inline-4 engines offer a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 lbs. This turned out to be slightly lower than many of the segment rivals out there. However, the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is still the worst of the lot when it comes to the towing front, as it can only tow a maximum of 1,500 lbs. 7/10 Rear Seat Isn't The Most Spacious
The cabin space has been a mixed bag for this generation of the Mazda CX-5 and that sees no changes with the 2023 CX-5 as well. Step into the rear seat, and you would be disappointed with the shoulder room of 54.8". As a result, having three passengers in the rear seat is going to be a little difficult. However, the headroom and legroom are comparable to the rivals.
The cargo capacity of 30.9 is pretty disappointing too since the Honda CR-V has 39.2 cu ft and Hyundai Tucson has 38.7 cu ft of cargo space. Nevertheless, the front seat is superb in terms of space and comfort. There are many cubbyholes and storage options in the cabin too. 6/10 Two Engine ChoicesThe lower six trim configurations come with the 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G DOHC inline-4 with cylinder deactivation and this engine comes mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic and AWD drivetrain. It produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque and the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times turned out to be better than most rivals.
However, if you want a bit more grunt, we would recommend you to get the Turbo trims which come with the 2.5-liter turbocharged SKYACTIV-G inline-4 engine producing 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 MPH comes in just 6.2 seconds and the quarter-mile is done in 14.9 seconds. Both the 6-speed automatic and AWD drivetrain remains unchanged for the Turbo trims too. 5/10 Pretty Fuel Efficient Most of the vehicles from the Mazda stable come with the same 2.5-liter engine and the 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. The naturally aspirated engine under the hood of the CX-5 helps to punch out 24 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highways.
The combined gas mileage of 30 MPG is on par with some of the rivals, however, both the Subaru Forester and Hyundai Tucson offered superior combined gas mileage. If you get the turbocharged engine, the fuel efficiency drops to 22 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highways. 4/10 Comprehensive List Of Safety Features The 2023 Mazda CX-5 comes packed with all the driver-assistance features as standard. This includes automated emergency braking, forward collision monitoring, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blindspot monitoring system.
Basic safety features like ABS, airbags, traction control, stability control, tire pressure monitoring system and reverse camera are offered too. The car is mostly constructed in high tensile steel and aluminum and that would have helped the CX-5 to achieve an overall crash safety rating of 5 stars in the NHTSA crash test. 3/10 Decent Warranty And Reliability Even though the warranty coverage is not as impressive as the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, it is still quite good. The 2023 CX-5 comes with a limited warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles. However, there is no complimentary maintenance coverage on offer. According to the NHTSA, we are also happy to report that the 2023 Mazda CX-5 received no customer complaints and recalls. Even the outgoing 2022 model received no recalls. When it comes to the JD Power rating, the older 2021 Mazda CX-5 received an overall consumer rating of 82 out of 100, which turned out to be better than Forester, RAV4, and Equinox. 2/10 Reassuring Braking Performance
The braking is done with the help of 4-wheel disc brakes and a host of other advanced braking features. As a result, the driver wouldn't feel tensed when a sudden braking need arises. The braking features like automated emergency braking, ABS with EBD, brake assist, hill hold control, and electric parking brakes are standard for all the trims as well. However, both the Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson offered lower 70-0 mph braking distance than the 2023 CX-5. 1/10 A 10.3" Infotainment System All the trims of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 come with the 10.3" infotainment display that is neatly integrated into the center of the dashboard. This infotainment comes packed with features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity. The infotainment is very smooth and easy to use and the rotary dial that is attached to the center console makes the user experience quite fuss-free. The Mazda Connected Services is included as standard and that helps in remote vehicle starting and other functionalities. There is a Bose 10-speaker audio system with higher trims too.
