A microphone is used to record your voice and other sounds into the computer

You may find yourself in need of recording audio using your desktop, laptop, or other mobile device. This article will show you how to do so using several popular devices.

All Macs (laptops and desktops) come with a built-in microphone.

  1. Go to your Applications folder
  2. Open QuickTime Player
  3. Click File>New Audio Recording
  4. Click the red record button to begin recording
  5. Click the black stop button to stop recording
  6. Go to File>Save As to save your file to your desired location

PC

All laptops and all-in-one computers have a built-in microphone. For users that have a tower/monitor configuration, you may borrow a laptop from IT to record audio, or may employ one of the other methods (e.g. using your smartphone).

  1. Open the Sound Recorder application in the following location: Start>All Programs>Accessories>Sound Recorder
  2. Click Start Recording to begin recording
  3. Click Stop Recording to stop recording
  4. Choose a filename and destination in the window that pops up
  5. Click Save

Web

There are many web-based voice recording tools, such as Online Voice Recorder: https://online-voice-recorder.com/beta/

  1. Go to https://online-voice-recorder.com/beta/
  2. If prompted by your browser, click Allow Microphone Access. You may also click on the Settings button to configure your microphone.
  3. Click the red record button to begin recording.
  4. Click the record button to end recording
  5. Click Save to download your recording

  1. Open the Voice Memos app (all iPhones have this app, and it can't be deleted)
  2. Press the red record button to begin recording
  3. Press the red stop button to stop recording
  4. Tap Done
  5. Type a name for your recording
  6. Press Save
  7. Tap your recording
  8. Press the share icon and email or AirDrop the file to another computer or device

Android

Each Android device is different, and different carriers may load different apps on the device. Because of this, there is no standard voice recorder app for Android like there is for iOS. Your device may have an app installed already (look for apps labeled "Recorder," "Voice Recorder," "Memo," "Notes," etc.), or you may have to download one from the Google Play store (search for "Voice Recorder" and find an app that meets your needs). Because the apps may vary, the instructions below are more of a guide.

Voice Recorder is an app for recording lectures, conversations, and other sounds (previously called Sound Recorder). Hit the big Record button (1), and add markers (3) to identify key moments as you record or play (2). Then you can trim (5), rename (7), or share your recordings (4), which are saved in Documents > Sound recordings. Select the trash can icon (6) to delete your recording, or the three dots (8) for more options.

A microphone is used to record your voice and other sounds into the computer

Sometimes abbreviated as mic, a microphone is a hardware peripheral and input device originally invented by Emile Berliner in 1877. A microphone allows computer users to input audio into their computers. Pictured here is a Blue Microphone's Yeti USB microphone - silver edition, an example of a high-quality computer microphone.

What is a microphone used for on a computer?

Below is a list of the most common uses for a microphone on a computer.

  • Recording audio for a video.
  • Voice recorder
  • VoIP
  • Voice recognition
  • Computer gaming
  • Online chatting
  • Capturing any noise in a room.
  • Recording voice for dictation, singing, and podcasts.
  • Recording musical instruments.

Where is the microphone plugged into a computer?

The microphone plugs into the computer sound card microphone port on the back of desktop computers. Some computer cases may also have a microphone port on the front.

On laptop computers, the microphone is plugged into the microphone port found on the front or side of the laptop.

Note

More advanced microphones, like the Yeti microphone pictured above, connect to the computer using USB.

Tip

The microphone port is usually marked with an icon of a microphone, as pictured. The port may also be labeled "mic." If the port connectors are color-coded, the pink connector is usually the microphone port. See our sound card page for further information about these ports for desktop computers. My Computer doesn't have a microphone jack

Some newer computers are no longer including a mic jack on a computer. For computers without a mic jack consider switching to a USB microphone or getting a USB sound card with a microphone jack.

What type of microphones are available?

Below are the most common types of microphones and how they are used.

Omnidirectional microphone

An omnidirectional microphone is capable of picking up sound in all directions around the microphone. These microphones are used in studios to record more than one person or musical instrument. For example, the Yeti microphone shown at the top of this page is an example of an omnidirectional microphone.

Unidirectional microphone

A unidirectional microphone is any microphone that picks up sound in one direction. This type of microphone is helpful for when someone only wants to record one thing, such as their voice when doing a podcast or voice-over.

Bidirectional microphone

A bidirectional microphone is a microphone that picks up sound equally from the front and back of the microphone. This type of microphone is good to use when interviewing a person to pick up the interviewer and interviewee sound equally.

Close-talk microphone

A close-talk microphone is designed to have someone's mouth near the microphone without creating noise that may occur with other microphones. These microphones are used with a headset and phones, and are great for voice-recognition software.

Clip-on microphone

Also known as a lavalier microphone, a clip-on microphone is a hands-free wireless mic that clips to the user's shirt.

Why is a microphone considered an input device?

Because a microphone sends information to a computer, it's considered an input device. For example, when a microphone records a voice, the audio is sent to the computer and stored on the computer's hard drive. Once the recording is stored as an audio file, it can be played, edited, and shared.

Microphones are essential to voice recognition technology, which uses your voice to issue commands to the computer and execute specific tasks. Examples of this technology are digital assistants, like Cortana, Siri, and Google Assistant.

What is used to record our voice and other sound into the computer?

A microphone is an input device; it sends information to the computer. For example, when it is used to record music or sound, the information (a record) is stored on the computer in response to play in the future.

What is a microphone used for in a computer?

The function of a microphone in a computer is to pick up sound, just like a microphone used by a singer on stage, and convert the audio sound waves into electrical signals. From there, these electrical signals travel to the sound card, where they are converted into digital signals, able to be processed by the computer.

What is a microphone True or false?

Answer: . A microphone is a device that captures audio by converting sound waves into an electrical signal. This signal can be amplified as an analog signal or may be converted to a digital signal, which can be processed by a computer or other digital audio device.

What is an input device that can be used to input sound into a computer?

Microphone. An audio input device that allows a user to enter sounds into the computer system.
