The eye shadow market is oversaturated with so many warm-toned, neutral palettes, it's easy to feel as if you've got one, you've got them all. And low-key, in many cases, that's just the God-honest truth. Fight me about it. Seriously, how many bronze and golden shimmers does one person need? But if I had to whittle down my stash of palettes like these down to one, the Juvia's Place Nubian Eyeshadow Palette would be my pick.

First off, as a woman with a darker skin tone, off the bat, I appreciate Juvia's Place for specifically making sure their eye shadows are pigmented enough to show up on the melanin-rich. And because the shadows are made for deeper tones, you know you're going to find a crease color that actually works, instead of having to rifle through supplemental palettes. The original palette contains four matte transition shades and eight shimmer colors in hues that range from champagne, copper, and bronze. They're neutrals that work for everyone and make it easy to create a full-on look in a snap.

I typically use my Juvia's Place palettes with a eye shadow primer, specifically my favorite Urban Decay Primer Potion. The colors are very pigmented indeed, but they are also super buildable and blendable. I do find that the primer helps the color show up and last longer throughout the day, but, duh, that's the job of a primer. As for the colors, I'm partial to the lighter, pearly coppery hue, particularly in the fall months when I want to do a look that skews a little pink. I apply it all over the lid, and then in the center, I add a brighter, more iridescent pink (like Fenty Beauty's Sangria Sunset) so that I can have that pink color without it looking out of season.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve likely heard of indie beauty darling, Juvia’s Place. This affordable, black-owned, indie beauty brand is known for its affordable and highly pigmented eyeshadows. But are they truly worth the hype? Keep reading for a review of the Juvia’s Place Nubian Palette.

About Juvia’s Place

As a brand, Juvia’s Place is all about providing beauty enthusiasts perfectly balanced, rich, luscious colors that can be worn every day or for a night out. The line sells at a price point that is affordable and accessible.

Juvia’s Place Nubian Palette Claims

Juvia’s Nubian Palette claims to be a palette full of the most essential collection of (warm) neutral colors that will work across all skin types. The brand claims that the shadows in this palette will blend flawlessly and be long-wearing on the eye. This palette includes four matte transition shades and eight shimmery, pearl-textured colors.

Price & Packaging

The Nubian Palette retails for $20.00 USD, making this palette just as affordable as many drug store favorites. Also, Juvia’s Place released a Mini Nubian Palette which retails for $10.00 USD.

Juvia’s Place Nubian 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette

As with all Juvia’s Place palettes, the outer packaging is a bright cardboard material with a beautiful depiction on the front. Personally, I prefer cardboard packaging like this because (1) this is less harmful to the environment since there is no plastic and (2) this packaging is super lightweight but sturdy. That being said, I wish that this palette came with a mirror.

In addition to lacking a mirror, this palette design has two other minor flaws. The packaging gets very dirty, so if you’re a beauty lover who hates messy palettes then this may not be for you. Also, there are no shade names for any of the colors in this palette.

Ingredients & Cruelty-Free Status

These shadows contain Talc and Mica. Some shades may contain Red 40, a red pigment that is known as a potential eye irritant. (I have no issues with this pigment.) Juvia’s Place is manufactured in China and is Cruelty-Free.

Juvia’s Place Nubian Palette Swatches

My forever disclaimer: Swatches are not a perfect indicator of eyeshadow performance. However, they do provide a clue as to a shadow’s pigmentation and ability to blend. (Spoiler: given that this is an older palette in my collection that I’m accustomed to using, I opted to only show finger swatches… since brush swatches don’t do the eyeshadows justice.)

The below photo shows swatches of each shade in the palette, from top left to right, starting with the top row and then moving down row by row. As previously mentioned, these shadows do not have names.

Juvia’s Place Nubian Eyeshadow Palette Swatches from L: R

The Juvia’s Place Nubian eyeshadows swatch like an absolute dream because of how intensely pigmented and buttery each shadow is. I find all of the shadows creamy and buttery; however, as with all soft eyeshadow formulas, the darker shadows produce a great deal of fallout.

Hands down, my favorite shade in this palette is the red-toned coppery shade in the right-most spot in the second row. Not only does this particular shade swatch the best, but it is easily the most vibrant shade in the entire palette. Also, this is not advertised in the palette claims, but the shimmery white shade in the top left of the palette has a golden, pinky duo-chrome reflect that adds an interesting spin on an otherwise classic-looking shade.

As a whole, the top two rows swatch (and perform) much better than the bottom row. The two mid-tone brown shades were a drier formula, so they require more effort when blending or packing onto the eye. Also, the dark brown and black were not as pigmented as the other shades in the palette (as evident by the swatches). These take some time to build up pigmentation on the eye.

Application & Wear-time

The Nubian eyeshadows are just as easy to apply on the eye as they are to swatch. In complete honesty, these shadows perform better than many of the high-end eyeshadows that I own. Although they are pigmented, the shadows are still easy to blend on the eye. As promised, these shadows are long-wearing. When I wear these shadows, they don’t fade or crease… even after 12-hours on my oil-slick eyelids (when worn over a primer).

Also, I can’t lie… the fact that I get compliments every single time I wear these shadows makes me love the Nubian Palette even more.

Where is the Nubian Palette sold?

Juvia’s Place can be purchased online via the Juvia’s Place website, at Ulta (in the US), and Beauty Bay (in the UK). Unless the shipping or customs costs are exorbitant, I recommend purchasing directly from the Juvia’s Place website as the brand frequently runs sales ranging from 30-50% off… AND quite a few influencers have codes that enable you to purchase the palettes at an even greater discount.

Final Thoughts on the Juvia’s Place Nubian Palette

If you couldn’t tell by my raving review, I love this palette and this brand. It is so important to support affordable, high-quality brands like Juvia’s Place because these brands make beauty accessible to the average consumer who may not have the knowledge or financial means to invest large sums of money in prestige beauty products.

Also, I love that Juvia’s Place celebrates diverse women. The brand features beautiful palette designs. Juvia’s Place offers shades that show up and last on a wide variety of skin-tones and skin types.

I don’t understand why The Nubian Palette gets so much hate online by Juvia’s Place fans. This is the first palette I’d recommend to a new beauty lover who is just starting to dip his or her toes into super pigmented, slightly colorful shadows.

Also, this palette looks like a great, affordable dupe to Urban Decay’s Naked Heat Palette ($54.00 USD). The Juvia’s Place palette may actually have a better range of shadows to create looks with depth.
