Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit at Sheba Medical Center offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for children and teenagers with diseases of the digestive system or liver. Inpatient and outpatient services are provided. The types of gastrointestinal conditions and symptoms that present in children can be dramatically different from those that occur in adults, and experienced specialists comprise the team of this specialized unit. Multidisciplinary experts, including surgeons, radiologists, and nutritionists collaborate with pediatric gastroenterologists to custom-design treatment programs for every patient. Our department is also actively involved in many clinical research trials in Israel and around the world.

• Gastroscopy – Endoscopy of the Upper Digestive Tract
• Capsule endoscopy
• Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy – Endoscopy of the lower part of the large bowel or the entire colon
• Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
• Hydrogen Breath Tests – are used for evaluation of Carbohydrates Malabsorption as well as small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth
• Manometry of the Rectum and the Esophagus
• Electrogastrography – a diagnostic procedure aimed to detect Gastroduodenal Motility disorders

Dr. Weiss received her medical degree from the Hebrew University – Hadassah Medical School and completed her specialization in Pediatrics at the Sheba Medical Center. Dr. Weiss was a clinical fellow in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, USA.

The 16th Congress of APPSPGHAN was held on October 5-8, 2023 at COEX, Seoul, Korea. organized by Professor Jae-Sung Ko and the KSPGHAN organizing committee. In this successful congress, there was a total of 685 colleagues from 36 countries. The Institute of Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Liver Diseases serves children with disorders of the digestive system, liver, pancreas and nutrition. The Institute is the largest of its kind in Israel and treats children from all over the country. It aims to be a home for its patients and to continue to be among the leading medical institutions in the world through encouragement and advanced professional training and research of the highest standards.

ESPGHAN has established a network of 27 National Societies of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition in Europe and beyond.

The collaboration of the National Societies with ESPGHAN is vital in order to promote good clinical practice, high standards of education and high quality research within Europe. The National Societies' local knowledge, expertise and access to local communities guarantee the achievement of the above goals. The support of ESPGHAN of the young trainees and the young researchers of the National Societies through various educational programs (exchange program, summer schools, young investigators forums etc.) as well as the support of the educational initiatives of the National Societies at a local level comprise a permanent important strategic plan of ESPGHAN.

Every year, a Forum of the National Societies’ Representatives is held during the ESPGHAN Annual Meeting. In addition, a more comprehensive ½ day meeting has been implemented in October 2018 and will take place on an annual basis, just prior to UEGW. ESPGHAN informs the National Representatives on its educational and other initiatives while the National Representatives express their ideas and proposals for further collaboration. Information of interest for the members of the National Societies is also made available regularly to all of the National Representatives by the ESPGHAN International Affairs Representative in collaboration with the ESPGHAN office.

The ESPGHAN syllabus for training in Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, developed in 2013, has been updated recently (Dec. 2018), again with the input of the National Societies, aiming at harmonizing the subspecialty training within Europe. We very much expect that the National Societies will influence on the governmental bodies to achieve the above goal.
