- Lan: You have lived in Japan for more than two years, could you tell me something about Japanese New Year, Mai? When is the New Year observed?
- Mai: It's on 1st January, and it lasts three days through 3rd January.
- Lan: Do people do the same things as we do in Vietnam?
- Mai: Well, there are some similarities and also some differences.
- Lan: Please, tell me about them.
- Mai: The preparations begin a few days before the New Year when housewives start cooking special food for New Year's Day.
- Lan: Do they clean and decorate their houses?
- Mai: Sure, they do. On the New Year's Eve every household does a big cleaning up. The idea is to get rid of the dirt of the past year and welcome the new one.
- Lan: Do they decorate the house with trees and flowers?
- Mai: Yes. they usually decorate their houses with some small pine trees on both sides of the door, which represent longevity and constancy. People also exchange cards and gifts.
- Lan: I see. And what do they usually do on the New Year's Eve?
- Mai: Family members sit around and start watching the national singing contest on television. But the last notes must be sung before midnight. Then television or radio will broadcast 108 bells. As soon as the 108lh bell is rung, people all say "Happy New Year".
- Lan: What do they usually do next?
- Mai: Some families put on special kimonos or dress to go to visit their shrine. Then they come home and eat their special New Year Day's food and drink a lot of rice wine. New Years Day is mostly celebrated with family only.

Welcome to Radio 3 Nature Programme. Today. I'll talk about Phong Nha- Ke Bans National Park, one of the eight world heritage sites in Viet Nam. It is located in central of Quang Binh Province, about 500 km south of Ha Noi. the capital of Viet Nam. Thanks to its complex geological structure with different kinds of stone, Phong Nha - Bang can be compared to a huge geological museum. Phong Nha- Ke Bang mountain can provide a lot of valuable information about the Earth's geological developing through various periods. One geological characteristic to notice here is the system underground rivers, grottos and caves in the limestone mountains.
The park is in an area with a high average rainfall; however, few rivers and streams can be seen here because the water is absorbed inside the limestone mountains. As a result, tens of millions of years, water has been eroding the rocks, creating numerous grottos aril] caves. Phong Nha- Ke Bang is famous for its caves such as Phong Nha, Tien Son and Thien Duong Caves. Son Doong Cave is considered to be the largest one in the world with 200 metres in height, 200 metres in width, and at least 8.5 kilometres in length.
Because of its geological value, Phong Nha- Ke Bang was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. I strongly recommend that you find time to visit Phong Nha- Ke Bang Park. It'd be worthwhile exploring its caves and grottos and seeing the diversity of its flora and fauna. If you enjoy mountain climbing, there are some steep mountains over 1,000 metres high, which can be a real challenge for adventurous climbers.
