Death is not to be taken lightly, even in fiction. The best deaths significantly affect the characters and plot. Many, however, are just for show.

Death in fiction is a powerful storytelling tool that can be used to great effect, depending on the type of story being told. Using death is most effective when the character's death serves an important narrative or character-building purpose. Sometimes, infusing death with shock value can even enhance the effect that character deaths have on the audience.

But more often than not, shock value deaths are melodramatic, gory affairs that can be hard to sit through. Whether a death scene makes someone want to roll their eyes or grab a box of tissues, there are plenty of anime characters whose deaths are mostly for shock value and little else.

10 Miki Makimura Was Ruthlessly Murdered (Devilman Crybaby)

Technically, Miki Makimura's death did serve a purpose in Devilman Crybaby: This is the moment that Akira Fudo's faith in humanity is tested. But the way that Miki is killed is what makes this death so shocking. She's chased down by a human mob while she's trying to flee to safety, stabbed in the back, and then cut into pieces. To make matters more melodramatic, the mob lights her home on fire and dances outside, all the while waving around sticks with her body parts impaled upon them.

9 Mike Zacharias’ Death Is Needlessly Cruel (Attack On Titan)

Like many characters in Attack on Titan, Mike Zacharias seemed as if he would serve a bigger role in the story, but he dies pretty early on. The most important narrative goal in this scene is to communicate to viewers that the Beast Titan can talk and give clues as to the true nature of Titans. But the way Mike dies is needlessly gruesome, as the Beast Titan first paralyzes Mike with fear with its speaking ability. It then gives the green light for the nearby Titans to tear Mike's body to pieces.

8 Hiroko Fuji Was Mercilessly Beaten While People Watched On (Psycho-Pass)

Truthfully, Hiroko Fuji's death scene in Psycho-Pass is meant to be shocking, since it's supposed to effectively underline the dystopia that the Sybil System has created. Society under the Sybil System is numbed toward violence as people have become complacent in the fact that "true crime" will be stopped by one of the roaming Psycho-Pass scanning robots.

But Hiroko's murderer is wearing a helmet that shields his true Crime Coefficient, meaning he cannot be identified as dangerous. The fact that the crowd simply stands by and films the attack creates an uncanny discomfort in this scene.

7 The Bloodbath After Lucy's Puppy Dies Is Disturbing (Elfen Lied)

The depth of human cruelty is one of the heavier themes in Elfen Lied, and the scene during which Lucy's bullies beat a stray puppy to death is disturbingly potent. After trusting a classmate with the location of a stray puppy Lucy has been feeding, her bullies take the opportunity to use the puppy as emotional ammunition against her. Lucy refuses to give in to their demands, so they ruthlessly beat the puppy to death. Once Lucy realizes what they've done, she uses her vectors to kill them, splattering the walls with their blood.

6 Mayuri's Train Death Emphasizes Okabe's Dilemma (Steins;Gate)

Preventing Mayuri Shiina's death is one of Rintaro Okabe's chief goals in Steins;Gate, so it's inevitable that viewers have to see her die. Luckily, this death isn't portrayed as gruesome as it could be, but it's nevertheless shocking. While Okabe and Mayuri are waiting for the train to escape the SERN assassins, Nae Tennouji enthusiastically runs over to say hello. She accidentally knocks into Mayuri, which causes her to fall in front of the incoming train. Realistically, there should have been a fair amount of blood spatter, but the scene spares us the gory details.

Since Another is about a curse and urban legend surrounding mysterious deaths in Yomiyama North Middle School's class 3-3, one of the class members had to die eventually. The very first death in Another features one of class 3-3's officers, Yukari Sakuragi. After being informed that her mother was killed in a car accident, Yukari dashed from her classroom to head to the hospital. It was a rainy day, so she had her umbrella with her, but the floor was also slippery with water. In her haste, Yukari tripped and conveniently pierced her neck on her umbrella on the way down the stairs.

4 The Chandelier Trap Scene Was Unnecessarily Dramatic (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: Gou)

Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou is the successful reboot of the original Higurashi 2006 anime, and a key part of its narrative is Satoko Hojo's desire to keep Rika Furude in Hinamizawa. Satoko gains the ability to "loop," or travel back to a certain point in time to try and force Rika to accept Hinamizawa as her forever home.

For Satoko to repeat a loop, she needs to die. Higurashi: Gou offers a plethora of gory deaths for its characters, but Satoko's flashy chandelier trap takes the proverbial cake.
