Germany’s T+A has spent the last couple of years developing a completely new range of all-solid-state electronics: its ‘HV Series’.

Built into an all-aluminium case, the PA 3000 HV amplifier’s individual sub-assemblies are screened in separate chambers. An upper compartment houses the preamplifier and voltage amplifier stages, while the electronic control processor and circuitry for driving the display screen – fed by a separate power supply arrangement – sits in a recess machined out of the 40mm-thick aluminium front panel. A 10mm-thick dividing wall shields the top section from the left/right current amplifier stages and the unit’s massive power supply is in a lower compartment.

The PA 3000 HV’s topology is based on a cascode differential amplifier and is entirely discrete, with galvanic isolation between the voltage and current amplifier stages. All stages are driven at an unusually high voltage – hence ‘HV’.

Switching functions are carried out by sealed gold-contact relays integrated within the circuits to keep wiring to a minimum and signal paths as short as possible. The electronic volume control employs discrete resistors and gold-contact relays to provide gain adjustment in 1dB increments.

At the rear there are six line inputs, numbers 1-4 being switchable between single-ended (RCA) and balanced (XLR) operation. The two sets of rhodium-plated speaker terminals can be configured for bi-wiring or for driving a second pair of speakers – this is done via the amplifier’s setup menu. All key functions can be controlled via the chunky aluminium handset supplied.

Fearful power

The company may claim the feedback-less Class A design of its amplifier achieves tonal characteristics similar to those produced by valves, but it doesn’t deliver anything like what most audiophiles would describe as a traditional ‘tubey’ sound. The PA 3000 HV is a subjectively fast and vivid-sounding amplifier that dispenses tight, punchy and fearfully powerful bass.

The source used first was T+A’s DAC 8 [HFN Oct ’12]. Playing a selection of familiar test pieces swiftly revealed the T+A amplifier’s incredible resolution and subjectively grippy bass control. With tracks from The Sheffield Jazz Experience compilation album, for example, such as Dave Grusin’s ‘Captain Bacardi’ and ‘Things Change’ by David Benoit with horn player Jerry Hey, we thought the sound could appear as rather stark and matter-of-fact.

There was nothing in the way of ‘electronic haze’, while the amplifier’s subjectively black background allowed the image to extend way back from the plane of the loudspeakers. Yet despite all this, the amplifier’s absence of ‘character’ could make the music seem somewhat sterile.

However, when partnered with T+A’s matching MP 3000 HV media player the PA 3000 HV amp sounded noticeably more colourful and full-bodied through the midrange. Pair the two HV components and the result is utterly stupendous: startling dynamics, holographic imaging and stunning transparency, with a fabulous ability to separate instruments and paint a three-dimensional picture of a recording venue.

In the first part of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring on Telarc (Cleveland Orch/Maazel), woodwinds and strings were beautifully separated, with palpable space in the auditorium. In particular the amplifier rendered the brass in an appropriately aggressive, startling and unsettling manner – although it avoided the white hot, over-bright glare that is an all too common trait of lesser solid-state amplifiers.

Verdict

This amplifier powerhouse warrants consideration not least for its superlative build and sophisticated engineering. With sympathetic partnering system components it will thrill and captivate.

The A 3000 HV is the ideal power amplifier and complement to the P 3000 HV pre-amplifier. It is designed as a stereo power amplifier, but can also be configured to work in mono mode, in which guise it is capable of delivering twice the current and in which it doubles the pure Class-A mode. Thanks to HV technology, this powerhouse offers superb sound characteristics as well as incredible power and performance: a standard which is unsurpassed even by much more expensive amplifiers. The principle of splitting a High-End system into separate pre-amplifier and power amplifier gave our development team the opportunity to implement the finest possible circuit designs and technologies without having to take into account space considerations and case restrictions. This applies both to the electronic components and the mechanical design of the case, since - if the aim is to attain the best possible sound - a preamplifier’s requirements are fundamentally different from those of an power amplifier: preamplifiers process relatively small signals, and the crucial aspect of their design is the avoidance of induced and other interference; power amplifier, on the other hand, have to cope with relatively large signals, and the stability of the power supply, its current delivery capacity and performance independent of load are much more important.

Case Compartment

The entire electronic power circuit with output stages and mains power supply is housed in its own shielded compartment in the underside of the machine. The dividing wall between top and bottom sections is 10 mm thick and - of course - is also made of aluminium. Voltage amplification and current amplification circuitry is housed on separate circuit boards in separate case sections, in order to prevent mutual interaction. The sophistication of the design does not stop there, as we have even provided galvanic separation between the two. Thanks to this uncompromising design philosophy there is absolutely no feedback of the loudspeaker currents into the voltage amplifier stages, and complete freedom from loudspeaker loading effects.

Amplifier Section

The voltage amplifier is an extremely linear, broad-band, cross-coupled differential cascode amplifier, followed by a single-ended Class A large signal stage which provides superb sound quality. The fully symmetrical current amplifier stage (output stage) is fitted with MOSFET drivers and the latest “thermal tracking” bi-polar output transistors; this combination delivers a very harmonious audiophile sound image combined with tremendous current delivery capacity. The output stage transistors feature integral temperature monitor diodes which we use to maintain the power transistors at an absolutely constant operating point, regardless of temperature, allowing us to control the circuit’s distortion behaviour perfectly, regardless of the momentary load. By maintaining full symmetry in the arrangement of all conductors in the output stages, speaker cables and mains power supply we have succeeded in providing complete compensation for all signal currents. The net result is a complete lack of magnetic stray fields, and no electromagnetic feedback into the input stages.

Speaker Terminals

The enormous power of the power amplifier calls for particularly high-quality, stable loudspeaker terminals; they are machined from solid pure brass and rhodium-plated on every surface. Rhodium is the perfect contact material: as conductive as silver, as durable as platinum, as corrosion-resistant as gold (and unfortunately as expensive as all three put together). For the most exacting requirements a further option exists for improving the quality of the voltage and current supply: this is the PS 3000 HV supplementary mains unit.

A 3000 HV Power Amplifier Reviewd

If you consider the whole audiophile picture of performance and value, T+A, with its considerable engineering acumen, has produced something exceptional with this amplifier. It is uniquely positioned at this price point in the audio pantheon. This amp simply delivers—and does so by creating a very engaging sonic picture through its clarity, accuracy, dynamics, and bass performance. So much so that I have made the A 3000 HV amp and the matching P3100 HV stereo preamp my new reference electronics, a choice that I expect will bring me years of musical satisfaction.

Unendliche Weiten

T+A’s ‘no compromise’ HV series components are designed for the luxury audiophile market. In that context, this latest amp combo is sensational value. We’ve said this so often of T+A’s separates there’s a danger of it becoming tedious: if they were made by a boutique audio manufacturer they’d come with price tags two or even three times larger. Little wonder the German company is selling them hand over fist.
