What is age discrimination and why did the US create the Age Discrimination Act of 1975?The Age Discrimination Act of 1975 prohibits discrimination on the basis of age in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. The Act, which applies to all ages, permits the use of certain age distinctions and factors other than age that meet the Act's requirements.
Who started Ageism?Robert Butler coined the term “ageism” to describe the systematic discrimination against older people. He equated it to racism and sexism during the Civil Rights movement. It has been over 45 years since Dr. Butler raised this issue, yet our culture has not changed.
