So I just finished watching Cycle 1 and here are my thoughts:

The beauty about the first seasons of reality shows is their autencity. Since nobody knows what to expect or how the structure goes, everything looks and sounds more genuine (at least as far reality TV goes). From season 2, no matter how much you change things, you pretty much know what you're getting into and you come up with your own ideas of how to an act within that structure. And ANTM was no exception, you can easily see that everything was threading ground as they went. For example, in the first few episodes the first girl called out wasn't necessarily the one with best photo and Tyra didn't lecture the bottom two. The pannel room was rather dodgy, non-instrumental music was used and the camerawork was quite messy (but somehow I liked it that way). Plus everything screamed 2003: the girls' looks and clothes, the filming, the illumination, the editing, that personal trainer, that male model... And of course, the show was more serious about the modelling industry and pretty much all the photoshoots and challenges looked legitimate and realistic, a far cry of the ludicriousness of later cycles. The only cringy challenge was the one where they had to accompany some random French rich guys around Paris (that felt rather escort-ish) but I loved it that Adrianne of all people won it and did some un-ladylike stuff with her prize.

THE JAYS - I loved that they made their mark early on, establishing their iconic status. And I never thought I'd say this but Jay Manuel looks better as a tanned Silver Surfer than with his natural dark hair. THE JUDGES - Am I the only one who liked Kimora? Granted next to Tyra and Janice, she was totally obliterated at pannel, but I didn't mind her at all, but had she continued I would love to see her playing the good cop to Janice's awful cop. And now that I mentioned her: Janice as reality TV personality is amazing but as a judge she was terrible. She was inconsistent (she changed her mind about certain girls pratically every week) and cutthroat just for the sake of being it. Queen of destructive criticism. Tyra wasn't too crazy here, so fine by me. Oh, and there was that random guy from Marie-Claire...*crickets chirping* TESSA - Very pretty and her look was very 2003 but couldn't model to save her life. At least, that bonding with Adrianne over smoking was cute. KATIE - Yep, glam model was definitely her avenue. I've been told she made quite some buck from it, so you go girl. NICOLE - Yes, put your F-list famous boyfriend above it all in your life. I'm sure you'll find happiness. EBONY - She was very hit and miss when it came to modelling but she had quite some iconic moments. Her fake crying when she was selected, her girlfriend's visit, her rant about her head not being evenly shorn and especially her "bitch please" look to the camera during the praying circle. That's the best pose she will ever do. GISELLE - Annoying, whiny, immature. And she was definitely that kind of person who acts insecure just to have their ego constantly padded. KESSE - The most likeable. Maybe not too model-esque (and her similarity with Tyra is debatable) but she was super adorable, and unlike Shannon, she had a spine and got along with the non-Christians. No wonder everyone felt sad with her elimination. Plus sis was twerking long before it became mainstream! ROBIN - Being 26 and plus-sized, there was no hope in hell she would win and never truly excelled in any shoots. But she definiely gave life to the show by being the OG ANTM villain/Bible-thumper. Robin was hypocrit, Robin was delusional, Robin was a diva, Robin was intollerant. Pretty much Robin was like every self-proclaimed Christian in America who keeps on preaching, shoving the Bible in other people's throats and crying their right to express their beliefs while their actions hardly reflect any truly Christian values. But of course, that's what made Robin an icon. She also had great moments: bribing some random French guy to guide around Paris during the go-sees, calling everyone Miss (thus Miss Jay), the flashing boobs-gate, her dismissal of Ebony's makeover rant and then there's her grandmother piece of wisdom: "If you don't stand for something, you fall for everything." Heck, even Sia probably tapped into that. ELYSE - Icon, icon! Miss Yaya, please take note: if you're going to act condescendent and like you're above all this, this is the way to do it. Every single thing Elyse said gave me so much life and it's the kind of stuff I wish I was able to say from time to time. And even when she wasn't being brainy, she was still awesome, like in her legendary rant. Granted it's not the smartest thing, but I can relate to that. In my current job, most people aren't as academically educated as I am, and even though I vow to give them my respect and not to consider myself superior to them, more often than not they engage in vapid and brainless conversations that makes me fume on the inside. But despite her dismissal, not only she was the best at modelling and victory was hers to lose (hadn't she talked herself out of the top 2), you could see that despite desperately holding on to her cynical academic side, she was slowly but surely loving the modelling industry and it was no wonder she had one of the most successful post-show career. SHANNON - The living proof of the phrase "great is an enemy of good": Shannon consistently did good but never really did great, both in this and in the All Star cycle. The snake photo was her best one, but even in that photoshoot there were more iconic photos. Other than being hot and buttered about the male model, she spent most of the cycle being Robin's minion (of course, it was her who made Shannon back out on posing nude!) and it was nice to see her finally come out of her shell after Robin was gone. But of course, she made to the top 2 by default and with the finale deprived of the expectable Elyse/Adrianne clash, there could only be one winner. ADRIANNE - In the casting episode, did anyone notice that the first girl ever to appear on camera getting out of the SUV was Adrianne? With Elyse out, Adrianne was the obvious winner but she deserved it as well. Plus her storyline of a tomboy, awkward, stoner-voiced, slightly loopy rock chick being transformed into a supermodel was an even better one. Modelling wise, she was the only one giving Elyse a run for her money and her relationship with Elyse was very fun to watch (and I loved how it wasn't without its mutual shading: Elyse venting about Adrianne's Jay And Silent Bob quoting, Adrianne declaring Elyse a delusional anorectic). Having watched Cycle 6 before this one, I found eerie the amount of similarities between Adrianne and Danielle: both were picked on their accents by the judges, both went through crippling sickness but pushed through, both had a loving bond with their mothers, both won after starting out middle-of-pack-ish. Thus it was shame to know what happened to Adrianne post-show and how basically everyone turned the back on her and I totally command her for giving the middle finger to all and paving her own way.

Cycle 5 next for me.
