I was going through my games list today while waiting for friends and I moused over Spec Ops: The Line, I remember the first time playing Spec Ops: The Line i really didn't know what to expect, I thought it was just another war game to play through, man was I so wrong, Spec Ops: The Line is a game that, if you have no idea what to expect going in, you're going to be left sitting there afterwards actually kind of upset in real life at what transpired, the writers did an amazing job of creating this story for a game environment, a true "adult" game, I have friends who served in the military who can't play this game because of the story it tells.

This review will contain some spoilers, but since it's such an experience i'm going to leave out key parts of the games story so that people can play it first hand and get the same experience that I think everyone got when they played it for the first time, so lets jump right into it.

War Is Hell.

Story and Setting.

A few months before the main story kicks off, the middle east is assaulted by the worst sand storms known to man, Dubai is almost completely swallowed by the storms and society breaks down after the ruling class lied to the population about the severity of the storms while secretly evacuating, as the war in Afghanistan died down the 33rd(damned 33rd) battalion under the purview of Colonel John Konrad offer themselves to secure Dubai and try and bring stability to the region.

As the storms became even more ferocious the civilian population left behind became more desperate as food and water began to run out, Colonel Konrad declares martial law in Dubai and news begins to slip that the 33rd are committing atrocities and war crimes on the civilian population, eventually the CIA was sent in to negotiate the subdue the 33rd and get the civilians out of Dubai, a ceasefire was agreed upon, and the 33rd said they would be leading a convoy of the civilians out of the city, that is the last the world hears of the 33rd or the CIA black ops team for months.

After sometime Delta operators are tasked with flying into Dubai to discover what has become of the 33rd and all of Dubai, led by Captain Martin Walker, Staff Sergeant John Lugo and First Lieutenant Alphanso Adams, landing on the outskirts of Dubai a massive storm wall engulfs the outskirts of the city, when the sand clears for a few moments and reveals that Dubai is almost completely buried under the sand, upon arriving at the outskirts they are immediately taunted by means of radio by "The DJ".

The operators pick up the signal of the lost CIA operatives and begin to work their way into the city to it's location, upon arriving they realize too late that it's a trap set by another CIA agent and are set upon on all sides by the 33rd and by mercenary saudi's hoping to escape by working for the 33rd, this journey takes them into the heart of Dubai while constantly under attack by the 33rd, but also the sandstorms and the destroyed buildings that are on the verge of collapsing.

They are helped by another CIA agent, Gould, who helps them to escape into the back streets, before Gould disappears saying it's better off if they still think he's dead, some time passes and the Delta units move through Dubai, clearing the streets of 33rd and mercs, all the while being taunted by the DJ who seems to have speakers all over the city, they then hear the voice of Gould, who has been captured and is executed on air after attacking a place know as "the gate" the delta operators, visibly by what is happening in Dubai head for the Gate.

Upon arriving though, the 33rd are heavily entrenched and waiting, they have been lured into another trap, completely overwhelmed and outgunned, Captain Walker orders the team to use the white phosphorus mortar shells at their position, a chemical agent that burns at 5,000 degrees and literally sets the air on fire, after the salvo is over, the delta team walk through the aftermath, charred and burned soldiers slowly dying in agony are everywhere, it isn't until they reach the gate that they realize what they've done.

An entire pit of burned civilians line the gate, their salvo killed all of them along with the 33rd who seemed to have been protecting them, the team breaks down on itself with Captain Walker looking shell shocked at what he has just done, the team begin to fight and argue amongst themselves as they began to realize the horror of what has happened in Dubai, as well as suffering under the constant stress of witnessing these atrocities and being under constant attack, they eventually compose themselves and push on.

They make their way to the last known holdout of Colonel Konrad's leadership team to find that they have been tortured and executed and set on fire, as they document what has happened and realize Konrad is responsible for what has happened in Dubai, they receive a call on their radios from Konrad himself telling to team to move outside the building, once outside they are met with multiple snipers and 2 men strung up on a rail, one a Dubai leader and the other a 33rd member who has "committed serious crimes", Konrad then manipulates Walker into choosing which one dies, the dubai leader or the 33rd soldier, it's up to the player to pick.

I'm going to leave the story line here as it gets pretty intensive and spoiler filled afterwards, but the overarching narrative of the story line is based in realism, we all liked watching movies or playing games where the strong soldiers battle through everything where nothing seems to faze them, this story however paints an accurate depiction of what soldiers have to face and how they would react in this given situation in real life, it's a brutal, gripping story that hits a lot people right in the heart about the atrocities and hardships of war, and it only gets worse from here on out.

Game Play

Spec Ops: The Line is a squad based 3rd person shooter, you rely heavily on squad tactics as well as your own player character, the game play is largely cover and return fire, with some different elements thrown in such as grenades and different weapon types, the environment also plays a very big part in the game as sandstorms can strike without warning reducing your visibility to next to zero as well as crumbling buildings and walkways falling apart on you that make for some pretty interesting game play.

It is also surprisingly tactical, as the game hopes to achieve realism, a three man squad can't go in guns blazing against 25 armed men, you have to slowly work your way around objectives and pick enemies off or lure them into kill zones, the big open and heavily detailed maps give you a lot of room to work with and there are usually multiple paths to achieve victory, but the same is for the enemy, as they can come from any direction, roping in from atop buildings or shooting you through holes in the floor made by damage.

The squad is broken into 3 parts, Captain walker is a front line soldier who advances quickly and calls the shots, Lieutenant Adams is a heavy soldier who uses things like grenades, launchers and other special weapons to manipulate the battlefield and Sergeant Lugo is the team sniper who uses range to assault key enemy strong points such as Machine gun nest or targets that have your squad pinned down.

Apart from the actual game play there are a few smaller things that you may notice that change with the longer you progress in the game, as the fighting gets fiercer and the team begins to suffer under the stress of combat and being in Dubai they will eventually become more angry, basically screaming at each other at what to do, the combat also becomes a lot more brutal, as the way you kill off downed opponents or execute them becomes incredibly savage towards the end.

I want to make a distinction, that while the game play isn't groundbreaking or revolutionary, it's very apt for the game, as the main factor of Spec Ops: The Line is the incredibly involving story line, the game play doesn't need to be anything special(even though it's pretty cool) as the game play ties in to the realism of the narrative, so don't expect to be doing back flips over sandbags and bullet time, the game is meant to be as realistic as possible, while not being invasive on the general flow of the game, which they do a great job of.

A truly disturbing tale.

The biggest draw for Spec Ops: The Line is it's story, the gritty realism coupled with the emotional and often brutal reality of dealing with what is happening is placed squarely in the hands of the players, without giving too much away, I have friends who were in the military who couldn't finish the game because some of hit too close to home, it's hard to accurately describe the overall experience of Spec Ops, but at the end you feel just as emotionally drained as the characters(maybe not as much as them) and get a different perspective on war.

It was incredibly refreshing to have this game come out at a time where most war games were pretty devoid of story, or only ever portrayed soldiers as unrelenting bastions of stoicism that didn't have feelings, instead we're treated to a story about what very well could be real life soldiers having to deal with the rampant carnage happening all around them while still maintaining their calm and continuing on in with the mission they have been tasked with.

It's also important to note the feeling of isolation within the game, you have no help its just you and 2 fellow soldiers, the storm walls that surround the UAE means you have no tactical help from the army either, no communications in or out and the storms are so bad they can't realistically move many soldiers in or out, including helicopters and tanks, and apart from the non stop waves of enemy combatants the streets and cities are completely empty as the civilians are either dead, dying or helping the 33rd to kill you.

As you can expect with a realistic game wounds remain and small but noticeable things occur such as your uniforms ripping and tearing or sand eventually getting to the soldiers(everyone hates sand) combine all of this with no sleep and continuing violent escalation you get a recipe for a very "enjoyable" game that's very uncomfortable to play sometimes as your squad slowly descends into anger and hatred for not only each other, but the civilians, Dubai and the 33rd, it truly is an amazing experience to have when you compare the start of the game to the middle, then the middle to the end.

Critical Review and Reception.

There's not much else i can say about this without beating a dead horse, the story narrative is tense, brutal and gruelling ,the game play is tight and effective and also enjoyable and the delicate subtly of different aspects of the game are a nice touch to an amazing game, while Spec Ops: The Line didn't sell as much as it should of, owing to a number of factors(like how punishing it can be) it still serves as an amazing testament to what story telling in war games can and should be, i'm not saying every game should have the brutal realism of Spec Ops, but it's refreshing to have something like this pop up every once in a while.

So instead of trying to detail every small action of the game and how I experienced the game, I'd must rather you guys play the game and experience it firsthand as it's a game you don't want to know too much about as it detracts from the story, imagine someone trying to explain the plot of Jacob's Ladder or Mass Effect, it just detracts from the experience as a whole.

So, at the end of this I would say, Spec Ops:The Line, serves as a grim reminder of the horrors of war and gives you a small insight into what a soldier can go through, and as iv'e said a bunch of times, it's refreshing to see and play a game in the action genre that isn't angry silent soldier killing bad guys for 12 hours with no development.
