This box has extra USBs including a charging port (a keyboard/mouse doesn't effect frames) and this is critical because you'll likely need them.

VR: The GPU will work great with VR but you'll want to connect a monitor via DVI, the Occulus via HDMI, and disable the laptop screen. Otherwise the eGPU will think you want to re-direct video back to the laptop and cripple your performance. In theory an x4 TB3 link would work much better but it will hamper your performance anyway so don't bother. In short: If you needed an eGPU for VR, you're going to want a 2nd monitor to the EGPU and disable your onboard screen.

The box is quiet, installs in a snap and doesn't need special software. The "Aorus Engine" app is meh, I don't use it and if the LEDs can be controlled I have no idea how. Those could theoretically be distracting but they're hidden in my setup behind my monitor anyway. You'll never hear it with headphones on, and even without, your laptop is probably louder.

As far as performance goes, with the i7-7700HQ and TB3 link I was getting 4k@60+ ("Mein Leiben" settings) in Wolfenstein TNC. Not the newest game but it should give you a clue as to what to expect.

Based on all the research and reviews I did, I came to these conclusions:

  1. CPU matters more than Link, ideally get something with a nice boost clock and 35-45Watt range, ideally NOT a 15 "U" processor (although this would work game well with it, miles better than integrated, you're tossing decent performance) at least not for VR.
  2. Trying to use an eGPU on your internal monitor is probably not worth it, definitely not if you're only a x2 link on your TB3 port.
  3. With a faster i7/i5 45W mobile CPU, you can expect about 20% performance drop from a DESKTOP version of the same graphics setup (native pcie x16 link) with TB3 x4 link (40GBp/s) and about a 25% performance drop with a TB3 x2 link (20GBp/s). Measurably slower, but hard to notice and works great, with my brandy new Occulus.

If money is no object, get the 1080, it will do a little better and is probably worth it, I went with this version as I got it from a Warehouse Deal under $500.

I love this video card however I will admit I haven't tried OCing it yet but that will come in maybe another week when I feel comfortable with it.

This card comes with 3 fans and a nice radiator between it and the card itself. It stays cool all the time! I heard issues with the 1080 where they would catch on fire but never the 1070, plus the 1070 at the moment is significantly more affordable and there's no need for that extra horse power which is pretty negligible.

I've used this with my Oculus, Skyrim (Legendary fully modden and SE), GW2 at max everything including word boss raids, and just about every other game I could throw at it and it has no problem running the maximum framerate of my display (60monitor 75oculus). You want to run 4K? Sure, this beast of a card will run any game for you at 4k. I was running Black Desert Online at its highest possible setting on one monitor and GW2 on another with literally no frame drop! Kindly note that I am using a shader mod for GW2 which demands much more out of it.

For my build I paired the 1070GTX with a intel i7 6700k (unlocked), water cooled, corsair vengence LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 3200mhz, and a samsung SSD drive. The mobo itself is a GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 and it is beautiful. The 1070 is serious business and I would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to game and not have their video card catch on fire. I do feel however that games released in 2-years will be pushing this card beyond its capabilities and perhaps VR titles will become more intensive once it becomes more mainstream.

I don't remember what the base clock on this is, but I know it can go over 1800mhz in OC mode which is a big jump from my previous card which clocked at 600mhz. Some people will wait until the next gen cards to come out so they can get their hands on the 1080 for cheaper but that's the name of the game, how long are you willing to wait before playing games nicely? Remember that games take about 3-5 years to develop and cross-platform games are often developed for a console which puts us back in visuals by quite some time. I'm pretty confident we will be able to breeze by 2018 with this card.

Taking 1 star away cause amazon sent me a used product even though I PAID $600 for new. The box had a large rip, the cables where everywhere and with ripped plastic bags stuffed in the cardboard box.I assume the last owner was very impatient and just started tearing into the box in a bid to get everything out as fast as possible.

I didn't return it though since the actual eGPU looked to be in relatively new condition. The previous owner probably only used it for a little bit. I assumed this because when I turned it one it made this horrible whining noise that I assume came from one of the fans (only moving parts). Taking this into consideration I presume that the previous owner returned it cause of the noise. Maybe he thought it was broken or something. I open it up and saw that one of the tiny fans was making a god awful amount of noise. Luckily for me I bought two Noctua fans to replace the tiny fans that came with this GPU.

I did research on this product and learned that the tiny fans that come with it were pretty noisy (really low quality fans). Therefore I bought some Noctua fan replacements. These fans are easy to replace since the fan kits come with some splice connectors. Just cut the wires that connects to the old fans and splice it using the included splice connector with the new noctua fans. I also bought a 6.6ft active TB3 cable so that I can put my GPU out of the way.

My laptop didn't have thunderbolt enabled but it did support it. Had to do a bios update then install the TB3 drivers. After that I connected the eGPU and everything worked. The computer would say that it doesn't support eGPU and/or not all functions supported but it's completely wrong. Everything in the gaming box worked perfectly. Just ignore the warning messages. This eGPU is WAY BETTER than my internal gtx 970m.

WHO SHOULD GET THIS? get it < GTX 1060 (Any computer than has less than a GTX 1060 in performance)

I've done testing and its only slightly faster than a desktop OC edition GTX 1060.

P.S. - Buy the below items to improve your experience. Just type the below into the amazon search window. The TB3 cable comes in 3.3ft & 6.6ft. **DONT FORGET TO GET 2 fans**

I was checking prices between this card and the ASUS Strix. At las this card got a price reduction, and I went for it. Great card overall, runs as I expected, the RGB lighting is a great plus. I'm giving this card 3 stars because the annoying coil whine this card has when I run my games. I got a 4k /60Hz monitor and I must activate Vsync if i dont want to hear that annoying sound. Althoug this card is louder that I expected, the coil whine make it worst, and I cant return it because I live in Ecuador. Im going to search forums, to try to reduce the coil whine. I will update this review.

Edit: After a lot of research, I found that overclocking can reduce coil whine almost complety. But then I was having temps near the 80°C (load), so I re arrange my entire fan/radiator setup, and now I have 40°C Idle and 65°C load on the GPU, and the coil whine is barely noticiable, but is still present. There is a final flaw that was keeping me for giving this product 5 stars; when the card is not in use, the fans are suposed to be at full stop, and the led indicator lights up, but after using it for gaming, when u close the game and do other stuff that no requieres the card to be in load, 2 of the 3 fans will still run at very low speed, and the led wont light up. A little anoying, but I will give the card 5/5 stars for the performance (runing WoW on 4k at 80+ fps)

Purpose of this product: Provide a full gaming experience to those who have Thunderbolt 3 capable laptops and don't want to invest in bulky, battery sucking, gaudy gaming machines that they use for work/school.

If the above doesn't describe you, it's not worth buying. The Gaming Box doesn't give the same frames as a dedicated gaming machine. Benchmarks show about a 10-20% reduction in performance compared to standalone systems. What the box excels at is providing a hub or docking station in a sense, for your gaming needs. You simply plug in the TB3 cable and the system powers up everything; mouse, keyboard, mic, and a rapid charger for your compatible cell phone.

The form factor is the smallest available from all the DIY (akitio, razer, etc) and it works pretty seamlessly.

Complaints: The RBG is a bit of an inconvenient spot, but you can disable it if you wish. Sometimes if you shut your laptop lid, it won't power up the system if everything stays connected. Simply shut down the laptop, unplug the TB3 cable from the laptop, and unplug your Box from the wall power. Restart your PC and plug it all back in. This is less an issue with the Gaming Box and more a TB3/Intel format issue. Don't blame Gigabyte.

Summary, I love this little guy. It's way cheaper than the razer option and more compact and easy-to-use than the DIY systems. For more information comparing the different options, check out eGPU.io for a site that specializes in this stuff.

I bought this for my wife so that she could play the newest version of The Sims with her laptop, which didn't have quite enough GPU horsepower on its own. It worked for her, which allowed her to use her laptop screen with all of the complex processing of The Sims (3? 4?) She used it only a handful of times before she got a new laptop that didn't need this device, and it sat unused for over a year. During the COVID period where I had to work from home, I fired this up to be my connector between an under-powered laptop and my 4K monitor, offloading some of the Zoom meeting load. After only one week of continuous use, the device died. I hear the small fan come on, but it won't respond or be recognized when plugged into the laptop. Pretty big purchase price for so few operational hours... and not at all under heavy load.

The device is solidly built and housed, was not too loud (better under desk than on it, but not bad), it went dormant whenever it is unplugged from my laptop or when my laptop went to sleep, it has cool lighting that can be coordinated with other devices, and hey, it made my wife's laptop able to run one of the most demanding apps I've ever seen (yes, more than many first person shooters). But had I used it continuously from purchase, I would have had a Dead On Arrival before the warranty ended. Now I have an expensive, cool looking, inoperable device.

I upgraded from a 750 3gb card. I went from medium graphics running 30-49 fps on demanding games (Crysis 3, Witcher 3, SoM) and no tessellation to everything turned on and all the way up and running 100+ fps. Heaven Benchmark on top settings went from 37fps average with the 750 to 98fps average with the 1070 G1. For $430, I just extended the usable life of my gaming computer by years. I had been considering a 980Ti before this, but this was cheaper, faster, and uses 100watts less, so I save another $100 by not having to upgrade my PSU. Can't speak for longevity (only put in yesterday), but it's factory overclocked and temps are staying nice and cool.

Not posting full specs, but for those interested I'm running a 1080 27" monitor, Windows 10, i7 4770k cpu, 32gb ddr2, and 500W psu.

The only weird thing is the packaging is so ridiculously large and empty that I thought I was missing something. (I had to look up a Youtube video of someone else opening the box to verify that everything was in there, though I couldn't think of what else it would need.) A pretty minor thing, so it doesn't affect the rating. The other thing is this card is pretty massive (extremely long, in particular). I just managed to get it into my full sized case (it's literally right against my HD component case, though not the HDs themselves).

Okay so.. Its a great GPU for Performance and Quality, 100fps in COD on Medium settings, 200-300fps in Valorant on Low, and with 420 mods w/ shaders 100fps on Minecraft. Now the GPU when it came in it was very Plasticity and had cheap feel. Now I was building my first ever Desktop Computer but, when gaming one of the GPU fans will spin, making a clicking or rattling noise, then stop spinning, over and over again, it wasn't to much of a problem but it is a little annoying, but with a headset it wasn't to much of a problem. Now while using my GPU later on my PC kept freezing and the GPU usage kept spiking to %100, could've been caused by something else. i will try some troubleshooting and than replacing it and see how that goes.

This egpu is a great box that turns my laptop into a desktop running a 4k monitor when I need it. Where my laptop fan was constantly running at max, now it doesn't and I can also play a couple games on a laptop that was not designed for that purpose. It could even charge my laptop in tandem with everything else it does at the same time. The ports on the back provide ample room for some devices; however, few of them actually work. This is where my main issues are: The usb's on the back of the device don't support an external hard drive (as the drive does not show up when I plug it into the box), and plugging a mouse into it provides consistent stops in the mouse pointer every few seconds - so that is a no-go. What else is there to populate four usb spots on here? I don't charge my phone from it since I have a dedicated wall plug, and plugging a headset in means that the audio will constantly be making various noises while cutting in and out. Apart from that, the fans in the box (not the gpu fan) are quite loud at random times, considering the short 1 ft. cable included with the device, means either you buy a longer thunderbolt or just put up with the sound. I opted for the latter as having the egpu on my desk for easy access is necessary. The fans are also not replaceable as they have what seems to be a proprietary connection to the board in the box. Also, I recommend immediately setting a more aggressive fan curve unless you want to cook some food with the heat this thing puts out.

Is GTX 1070 OC good?

Final Thoughts: The ASUS GTX 1070 STRIX ROG OC edition is an absolute beast of a card. At the least, it performance as well as any other flagship 1070 from other manufacturers.

Will a 1070 fit in a mini ITX?

Fantastic Mini ITX Case - Fits a GTX 1070! This case meets all of that criteria. The airflow is good, the sides are interchangeable, there is ample room for wiring (note: it is still tight, it is a very tiny build after all), and it accommodates a full-size GPU.

Is GTX 1070 outdated?

Q: Is the GTX 1070 Ti good for gaming in 2024? A: Yes, it's still a solid choice for 1080p and 1440p gaming, especially for popular titles. Q: How does the GTX 1070 Ti compare to newer GPUs? A: It holds up well against some newer GPUs, especially in terms of VRAM, but may fall short in the latest AAA titles.

Why is GTX 1070 so good?

The GeForce GTX 1070 features 8GB of GDDR5 memory running faster than ever before, and includes support for every feature and innovation announced alongside the GeForce GTX 1080.
