10 The Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Offers Enough PowerWhen the Fat Boy was upgraded to the 114ci Milwaukee Eight, things were certainly not going to go backward in the performance stakes. 100 horsepower and, more importantly, a mountainous 119 pound-feet of torque, which gives this 699-pound monster the most surprising performance. The fat rear tire will rip up the tarmac away from the lights and there is a ton of acceleration no matter what gear you are in or what speed you are doing. But the engine does it all with so little fuss or excessive vibration. If the sheer size of the thing isn’t enough, then those solid dished wheels look like nothing else on the road. You’ll be enjoying your Fat Boy for a long time. 6 The Solid Wheels Of The Fat Boy Are Not Dangerous In Cross WindsIt is a myth that has become believed through constant repetition, that in cross winds, those solid wheels act like sails and catch the wind, making the Fat Boy veer off course, with possibly disastrous results. Well, you can forget it. When a wheel is spinning, it creates a wall of air around it, meaning that any wind that comes at it from the side is diverted around the wheel. The Fat Boy is no more unstable in cross winds than any other motorcycle and probably appreciably less than those motorcycles with large areas of bodywork, not to mention adventure bikes that can be as much as twice the height of the low-slung Fat Boy. 5 The Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Is Pretty HeavyAt 699 pounds with all fluids and a full tank of gas, the Fat Boy isn’t exactly light. The low seat height helps that not be too much of a problem when pushing the bike out of a parking spot or the garage, but it can be intimidating to smaller, slimmer riders. On the move, it’s no problem but the prospect of overbalancing and dropping the bike and then needing help to pick it up can be a little overwhelming, especially if you’re not an experienced rider. 4 The Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Has A Restricted Lean AngleWhile the size and weight make the fat Boy feel solid and planted on the road, you’re not going to be flinging it through the corners, chasing sportier motorcycles. The Fat Boy is long and low and this always has penalties in terms of ground clearance at extreme lean angles. In short, the Fat Boy can’t achieve steep lean angles: something will always touch down, usually the footboards. While the resulting shower of sparks is entertaining for those following you, it will ultimately become expensive. You don’t necessarily buy a Fat Boy for scratching around corners, but the chassis is good enough to let you do that, if only you had the ground clearance. 3 The Wide Tires On The Fat Boy Hurt HandlingWide tires complete the distinctive look of the Fat Boy, but they don’t do much for the handling. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with the handling but the wider the tire, the more effort is needed to tip the bike into a corner, and certainly, on first acquaintance, it is a really strange experience, especially if you have been used to a smaller or sportier motorcycle with round-section tires. Tire technology for such wide tires has improved in recent years, rounding off the profile as much as possible, but there is still the feeling that you get to a certain point in the lean angle and then the bike seems to fall over the edge of the tire quickly, which can be disconcerting, even if it isn’t dangerous. It’s just something you have to get used to. 2 The Fat Boy Doesn't Come CheapWhile there’s no doubt you’re getting a visually distinctive motorcycle and one that’s instantly recognized, being a style icon in its own right, there’s no doubt that, at $20,000, it’s not cheap, and it’s not even as if you’re getting a particularly practical means of transport. Unless you spend a lot more money on accessories, there’s no screen, a small pillion seat, and no provision for panniers or a top box.
