Which of the following is a component of the Behavioural skills training procedure?

Behavioral skills training involves the use of multiple components that have been proven to be effective for teaching many types of skills, simple and complex, to a wide range of people. A variety of behavioral skills training exists, but the general model consists of 

  1. Verbal Instruction
  2. Modeling 
  3. Rehearsal
  4. Feedback 

Essentially, all these skills will be explained to the learner. The trainer then shows the learner how to perform it. Once the skill has been learned, the trainer invites the learner to practice it with him. It may be fun for the learner to switch roles with the trainer if that makes the process more enjoyable. Live feedback will be provided to the learner during role-play. When the learner shows consistent excellent performance, the role-play continues. 

The behavioral skills training process is divided into four parts. Let us understand those four components.

Four Components Of Behavioral Skills Training  

Instruction

Giving instructions is the first component of behavioral skills training. Ensure that the professionals receive clear and concise instructions. The instructions should be easy to remember and highlight the main teaching points. Visual cues can also be used for these instructions (remember, text cues are great visual reminders!).

It is easier for people to keep their focus on skills that will close the gap in learning when they know why they are doing something.

For instance, we may find ourselves arbitrarily asking learners to sit, stand, or engage in a different activity for some unknown reason when we are working on a ‘listening’ program for a learner. When professionals understand why a skill like listening is being taught, contexts and scenarios can be used that will apply to learners.

To construct a learners' listening repertoire, our instructors can simulate scenarios in the teaching environment.

Modeling

Clarity and conciseness, along with providing textual cues, are the second step in behavioral skills training. Lecture-style training usually ends here. We are trying to be as clear as possible, but there is always the possibility of misunderstanding.

The number of misunderstandings is higher than we think. You cannot be sure if the person in front of you has understood the exact thing, with the exact meaning of what you said.

A good way to clear up any misunderstandings is to show them. Demonstrate an actual example of what should be done: how it should look and sound. Taking advantage of as many different modalities as possible when teaching professionals will help strengthen the learning. You can use video modeling not to teach the professionals. In-vivo (in-person) modeling is highly recommended whenever possible.

For example, as an instructor, model how “communication” steps and instructions should look and sound. In this scenario, you can demonstrate with the help of two people how communication works within the team under the “listening” program. This will help learners to grasp the process more quickly. 

Rehearsal

More and more training programs include rehearsal in their teaching programs! It's likely that you've seen a recording of the program being run with a learner during training, workshops, or conferences.

A professional can then rehearse the new skill, after reviewing the instructions and observing the model. If possible, professionals in the company may practice implementing the program in-vivo with the other team member or with the instructor, depending on the type of training.

Working with learners, you can shape their behavior towards a closer approximation of the terminal goal. This method works best for corporate and enthusiastic professionals. They can be well trained by using the behavioral skills training model.

Feedback

As instructors, you must know that giving feedback can be a challenge (don't worry, you can practice providing feedback to others using behavioral skills training). Be sure to give constructive and positive feedback on their performance, and not only the areas that need to be improved.

When all four steps are completed, the behavioral skills trainingmodel of training does not stop. Professionals who attend a behavioral skills training course must master predetermined criteria. Working members of a corporation who do not meet the mastery criteria should revisit some of the steps and practice more.
