How do I add a virtual machine to Eve

Why EVE-NG?

Whether you are preparing for CCNA, CCIE, or any other Network related exams, one thing that is most important is Practice. But as you may know, already CISCOs official so-called “Packet Tracer ” is not as advanced and you can’t practice high-end lab in it and other option VIRL is very costly. The best solution and alternative is to use GNS or EVE-NG. GNS is okay but it takes up a lot of resources and is a little outdated as well. EVE-NG supports almost all of the different Vendors. In this guide, we are going to use PNET. Which is very similar to EVE-NG with its all PRO feature for free.

OK, let’s talk about how to set up the LAB itself.

Requirements:

  • At least 8 GB of RAM
  • Windows/ MAC OS
  • Processor above i3 (older generations will work but, I don’t suggest it)
  • VM-Ware Workstation Software
  • PNET OVA File

After downloading, install VMWare Workstation and open the software. Click on the highlighted button that says “Open a Virtual machine”. You’ll see the window opening. Locate the OVA file you downloaded from the Pnet Website. Click on open.

Click on Import

You’ll see it loading and after that, it will look like the following image.

Once it loads, it will ask for a username and password.

Username: root & Password: pnet

If you are using EVE-NG the password will be eve.

once you type the password, you’ll be prompted to do this.

you can change the password but I am keeping it the same, then it will ask for an IP scheme, you’ll have the option DHCP or Static. I always choose DHCP. The same for the hostname. Just keep hitting enter.

Then you’ll be prompted to this login one more time, if you have used the default setting like me then just use the same credentials.

Then type the following command and look for the IP address assigned to the “pnet0” interface

ifconfig | more

Like this

And now open the browser and type that IP address and use the following credentials.

If you are using EVE-NG you will be prompted to the login page,

Username: admin Password: eve

that's it for the EVE-NG, after this you can create a lab now. But if it is the Pnet as I do You’ll be asked to select to operate offline or online and then type login details if you don’t have the account, create one.

Always select Online mode for the first startup

and you’ll be on the homepage where you can create Labs or play with other options. You also have

Now you are done! well, almost.  okay, I’ll be honest. we are only halfway through.

We need to add Images now, Yes. It comes empty.

I’ll show you how to add and create a basic lab as well, but you should know something about the images first. I hope you are ready for this. You will have to buy them. 😐 There are ways you can get these images for free. But I am not promoting any kind of piracy though 🙄. Legally you can get the images like Linux and some others for free but for Vendors like cisco and Juniper you have to be a customer of them or you can buy their images. There are options like VIRL but that is totally different story. Ok, enough about that. Let's say I have the images downloaded. now, how do I get them into EVE-NG or Pnet running.

You will need FTP client software like Filezilla or WinScp, I am using WinSCP

After you open the application, it will look like this. in the hostname add the IP address of the Pnet which we used to access the WebGUI. and the default password

for EVE-NG: Username- root, Password- eve

and for Pnet: Username: root, Password: pnet

On the left side, you have your computer and on the right side graphical view of the Pnet VM, now we can browse the directories. Go to the /opt/unetlab/addons\

you should be seeing three directories. We can't go into each one of them right now. The folders are divided into the types of images we have. Like Linux [iol] images will go into Iol folder and qemu images into qemu and finally dynamips images, you might be familiar with this one if you have used GNS3, those images will go into the dynamips folder

Just drag the image and paste it into the folder on the right side and wait till it copies.

After that, you'll be able to see the image in your emulator. Just create a new lab by clicking on the highlighted option.

and add a node as I did in the below images.

and you have your LAB ready. now you can start the image and be ready to go. See, I even started playing with OSPF.  😁

This article was to set up the lab. In upcoming articles, we will see SD-WAN deployments.

See you in the next one! 😉
