While over the past few weeks we’ve been busy putting the likes of the GeForce GTX 1080, GTX 1060 and AMD Radeon RX 480 to the test, there’s one graphics card attempting to occupy the sweet spot in the centre of all these - the GeForce GTX 1070. We’ve got our hands on the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G. This little beauty retails for an RRP of £450, compared to £650 for the 1080 and £285 for the GTX 1060. You’d be hard-pressed to call it affordable, but it’s a card that sits at a fairly tempting price point considering the performance on offer.

Nvidia’s increased pricing across the board means the MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8GB is actually the monetary replacement for the GTX 980. As with all GTX 10 series graphics cards it comes packing a Pascal GPU manufactured on the 16nm FinFET fabrication process. This allows for a greater number of transistors, thus boosting both performance and efficiency while keeping temperatures down. In essence it’s a cut-down GTX 1080, offering a chunk less performance in exchange for whipping £200 off the asking price.

As with the GTX 1080 it comes with 8GB video memory, although we’re dealing with bog-standard GDDR5 rather than the faster GDDR5X seen on the 1080. This runs about 20% slower, but it’s about all you’ll need for top-end 1440p gaming.

Clock speeds have been given a token up from the reference model of course, OC mode jumping from 1506 MHz up to 1607 MHz. That’s a 7% gain which should in theory serve up a similar bump up in frame rates.

It’s juiced through a single 8-pin power connector, drawing on a very reasonable 150W TDP. This is joined by an extra 6-pin for those who want to attempt a bit more overclocking out of their 1070. Consider that the GTX 970 was a 145W graphics card, while what we have here absolutely trumps it in terms of performance efficiency.

If you’ve ever bought an MSI graphics card before, you’ll know the vast majority of models look basically exactly the same. Stack this up next the GTX 1080 and its hard to tell the difference. What’s here is pretty slick looking though, with MSI’s token red and black shroud. The dragon motif might not be to everyone’s taste, but all in all it’s a solid looker.

The MSI Gaming GTX 1070 comes with the latest TwinFrozr VI dual fan cooler. It’s got ‘Balls of Steel’ apparently, which is MSI’s typically macho way of explaining it’s got some ball bearings in it to keep it cool via the magic of thermodynamics.

Now, onto the important bit...

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G GeForce GTX 1070 Benchmarks - 1080p

At 1080p there is an argument that the GeForce GTX 1070 is overkill. It obliterates any game at any setting at this resolution. And in a sense, yes, it isn't strictly necessary; you can get away with much weaker. However, if you're chasing those 90+ frame rates on your GSync monitor, I'd have a hard time convincing you this wasn't a great graphics card to pair it with. If you want to play above 60 FPS on a 1080p monitor then the MSI Geforce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G is a fantastic buy, albeit comparatively expensive.

Within our benchmarks it does get slightly outclassed by the GTX 980 Ti at 1080p, which can actually be had for a cheaper price these days, although the difference is marginal at best. Where it really settles in and finds its niche however is 1440p. At 2560 x 1440 it's pushing twice as many pixels as a 1080p display, but thanks to the 8GB VRAM and mammoth memory bandwidth MSI's 1070 really doesn't run into many problems at what is rapidly becoming a de facto standard resolution standard.

MSI GTX 1070 vs MSI 980 Ti 1440p Performance

Msi gtx1070 gaming x 8gb review năm 2024
As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 1070 is a formidable graphics card. It comes in at roughly 20% less powerful than a 1080, but it's still easily capable of besting a stock GTX 980 ti in the majority of scenarios. That extra 2GB VRAM makes the 1070 the sensible choice for those after a longer term buy.

While previously the 980 Ti held sway over the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G at 1080p, the reverse is in fact true at 1440p. It's here where MSI's GTX 1070 really comes into its own, clearly benefiting from the additional video memory during certain scenarios. While the difference isn't so clear cut in the likes of The Witcher 3 and DOOM, games like Far Cry Primal and GTA 5 really give the 1070 room to shine.

Right now the GTX 1060 is perhaps not powerful enough for some games at 1440p, while the GTX 1080 is a 4K beast first and foremost, leaving the GeForce GTX 1070 nicely positioned as the 1440p card of choice. In every single benchmark it's average over 60 frames per second, and usually well north of this, even with every setting cranked up to ultra. It's a fantastic card for a 1440p gamer to have, provided you can stomach that £450 price tag. It's asking price is hefty jump up from its predecessor the GTX 970, which was readily available for £300. Despite that, the jump in price is most definitely accompanied by a worthy jump in performance.
